Australia’s whole-of-economy Long-Term Emissions Reduction Plan is the government’s plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
This document outlines Australia’s technology led approach to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and explains the intention to decarbonise the electricity grid and transport infrastructure.
The Plan focuses on 4 key principles:

-
Drive down the cost of low emissions technologies.
-
Deploy these technologies at scale.
-
Help Australia’s regional industries and communities seize economic opportunities in new and traditional markets.
-
Work with other countries on the technologies needed to decarbonise the world’s economy.
The following graph summarises the steps to Net Zero:

Affordable low emissions technologies are key to Australia in achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
The technologies prioritised through Australia’s Technology Investment Roadmap are estimated to deliver approximately half the emissions reductions needed to achieve net zero emissions in Australia.
Priority technologies are:

-
Clean hydrogen
-
Ultra low-cost solar
-
Energy storage for firming
-
Low emissions steel
-
Low emissions aluminium
-
Carbon capture and storage
-
Soil carbon.
-
Digital grid
